Small Towns Breaking Ground on Big Medical Projects

August 3, 2016 by Hilda Martin Topics: Construction/Development

Three 300-million-dollar hospital projects have broken ground in the last two months – and they’re outside the top 100 metros. These projects are large in scale and bring in national firms to design and manage construction. It’s interesting to see this kind of activity in a smaller town setting and it shows there are opportunities in our sector everywhere. Check out these projects and more when you subscribe to Revista!

UP Health System – Marquette

UP Health system and Duke Lifepoint broke ground in May on a $300M new hospital project with an adjoining 80,000 square foot MOB in Marquette, MI. The hospital is scheduled to open in late 2018 and will replace the former Marquette General Hospital. The project was designed by architectural firm Gresham, Smith and Partners who is working closely with the contractor, Skanska Closner. Skanska Closner is a joint venture between Skanska and a local Marquette firm, Closner Construction.

Dixie Regional Medical Center

Intermountain Healthcare just began a large expansion of their Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, UT, which will add 406,000 square feet in four new buildings. This will almost double the size of the hospital at over 1 million square feet and will cost over $300M when completed. Intermountain is planning to consolidate most or all of their St. George medical services into this one campus. HDR is the architect for this project.

BayHealth Milford Memorial Hospital

BayHealth is building a brand new $300M campus for the new Milford Memorial Hospital three miles down the road from the existing one. The plans decrease the number of beds from 168 to 128, but most of them will be private patient rooms. Part of the expansion is to help support an agreement with Nemours to provide more specialized pediatric services at the new campus. The architect is Cannon Design and the contractor is Whiting Turner. Opening is planned for early 2019.
