Rehabilitation hospital construction showing signs of rising in 2025

July 29, 2025 by Mike Hargrave Topics: Construction/Development, Policy/Legislation, Revista Best Practices

While outpatient construction has slowed down inpatient construction is holding steady to rising.  As you may know, Revista tracks inpatient general acute care hospitals, behavioral health hospitals, and inpatient rehabilitation hospitals (IRFs).  Within the IRF sector, Revista currently tracks over 500 rehabilitation hospitals in the US.  The sector has seen tremendous growth since 2014 growing from 306 open IRFs to 510 open IRFs as of 6/30/2025.  That’s growth of 67%!

Despite the growth, construction in the IRF sector is holding strong.  As of 2Q25, Revista has recorded 1.9MSF of IRF construction over the past 12 months.  While this is lower than the peak of 2.6 MSF in 3Q22, it is up from a recent low of 1.3 MSF one year ago.

Subscribers can search for the 510 and all construction relating to rehab hospitals through the RevistaMed subscriber interface.  In addition to property characteristics, Revista pull in cost reports on IRFs and tracks transaction activity within the sector.  Click here to schedule a demo of the RevistaMed subscription service.
